‘Green’, Chic and Smart Cork Accessories by Arture

03 Jan 2017

We have dedicated the first edition of the year, to Pantone’s colour of the year- Green, which is inspired by greenery and is selected to be the colour of the year as it comments on the concepts of environment, and envelops the notion to breathe, reinvigorate and appreciate the great outdoors. So, for the first #TuesdayTale of 2017, we thought of prodding into the personality of the colour and tell you the story of one of our finest brands, Arture. Their idea is about Art + nature = Arture. The equation that promises to be the future of fashion! All their products are chic and environment friendly, and you’ll love them as much as we love them, we promise!

Keshsa Vasan, 25, is Arture’s co-founder and ideator; and Shivani Patel, 24, is the co-founder and the creator at Arture. Both these young women are passionate about the environment and chic design, and it all shows in the collection of lovely bags and wallets, all made by natural cork.

KESHSA is originally from Chennai, and is presently in Denver, Colorado after completing her Masters in Marketing from the University of Denver. She says, “I come from a family of entrepreneurs. So there was always this thing in me that wanted me to do something on my own just like the others in my family. After completing my masters and working for a few companies, I knew I was ready to start something on my own. There is a part of me that also loves having a huge collection of bags. I hoped that someday in my collection I would have something that was more environmentally friendly that I could proudly add to the collection. There were endless possibilities for me but I was searching for something different and unique to do. When I re-connected with Shivani and we started talking about life, there was an idea that was born. Arture was given a thought and I knew right then that, that was something I was looking for, and it would be the perfect blend with my educational background, something that I was passionate about and my love for bags.

Shivani, who hails from Chennai says, “I completed my Bachelor of Design (Accessory Design) from NIFT, Chennai in 2013. My specialisation was in footwear and leather goods. I graduated with two awards: One for the Best Graduation Project and the other for Best Academic Performance. I have interned with Crew BOS in Delhi, Sabrina Scala Leatherware in China and Farida Shoes in Ambur. I went on to start a company of my own. But the hunt to do something unique and work with non-leather (and non-synthetic) materials continued. This led to starting the brand Arture with Keshsa.

From the time I was young, since my dad was in the leather goods export industry, I spent my summer holidays making clothes for my Barbies and small pouches and bags for myself. This led to a natural inclination towards design and accessories. During my course, my strength remained my design process.”

>> What is Arture

Art + nature = Arture. The equation for the future of fashion has been born amidst the warmth of Chennai city. Stemmed out of a love for nature, Arture creates lifestyle accessories such as bags, wallets, etc, without harming any of the critters we all love. Fashion doesn't have to come at the price of a life. Hence, Arture carefully handpicks their materials such that no element of nature is hurt in the making of the finest designs. They use natural cork.

>> For the Love of Art and Nature

“Shivani and I both are ardent animal lovers. Both of us hope to start a petting zoo of our own in our own ways in the future. So naturally our love for animals is our biggest inspiration. Arture was started to give people a good alternative for leather. There were other options to leather but they were not as durable or sustainable as leather. When we found cork fabrics we knew this was perfect. We wanted to give back to nature and this was our way.  Our love for animals, beach, a house in the woods, and meeting people inspire us and our designs! We seek inspiration in just about everything be it big or small. We try not to lose focus from the fact that we are a nature loving brand and we want to give back to Mother Nature in a way.”

>> On Arture’s Style

“We have kept our style minimal yet classy, simplistic yet functional, friendly and warm. A lot of research is done before a bag/wallet is designed. Based on feedback and suggestions from our consumers we add features to our styles.”

>> Cork Chronicles

“The cork oak tree is native to the majority of the Mediterranean. The sustainable and environmentally harvested forests host a rich ecosystem of biodiversity. Cork is the raw product of cork oak trees. A more familiar recognition of cork would be the material used for wine stoppers. The fact that no cork tree is ever cut down makes it the most ecological material of its kind. This specific product is not only natural but also unique, with many features making it so. In its natural form, cork is completely water-resistant and anti-fungal. The porous structure gives it an incredible lightness and flexibility. Strong and durable, cork is resistant to abrasions and is fireproof. With its softness and versatility, it's no wonder cork is known as nature's leather.”

>> Arture’s ‘Green’ Mantra

“Green” is a very powerful colour.  It is has a lot of energy, positive vibes, tranquil, refreshing and calm feeling. The world has become a more conscious place. Buying decisions have become more conscious, people are looking at what they are buying, careful spending has become the trend lately. So the colour chosen by Pantone makes perfect sense. There are lot of brands and people that are breaking the myth that going vegan, or being environmentally friendly is boring, not cool, or sustainable.  “Being green” or "Going green” is actually not that difficult. It just takes one extra small step.

“These have been our top sellers and my personal favourite. I use all of the above mentioned accessories and I am totally in love with them. It’s the little things that makes it a one must have. It is light weight, the colours are earthy, minimal style, and all of them have some functional attributes in them. Like the Arden Minimal wallet has pull tabs to access cards used frequently faster.
